If you’d like any further information about the specific changes that have been made to any of the resources listed above, please get in touch.

New resource: Times Literary Supplement Historical Archive

Access to the Times Literary Supplement Historical Archive has been enabled in Library OneSearch. Access is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

The Times Literary Supplement Historical Archive provides full-text digitised versions of every copy of the TLS published from 1902-2008. This complete online facsimile edition includes over 300,000 reviews, letters and poems, and access to previously unpublished biographical information about TLS contributors, many of whom originally wrote for the paper anonymously.

New resource: Picture Post Historical Archive

Access to the Picture Post Historical Archive has been enabled in Library OneSearch. Access is direct on-campus and by university username and password from off-campus. The resource is described as follows:

The Picture Post Historical Archive offers the complete digitised, full-colour archive of the Picture Post from its first issue in 1938 to its last in 1957. Picture Post’s groundbreaking approach to photo-journalism saw the magazine offer humorous and light-hearted snapshots of British daily life (publishing “thousands of photos of ordinary people doing ordinary things”) to the serious and history-defining moments of domestic and international affairs. More than 38,000 pages and 95,000 articles are available to search and browse, all covering a crucial period of twentieth century history: from the years leading up to World War II to the first decade of the Cold War.

Gale-Cengage databases – Shibboleth error

A problem affecting the Gale-Cengage Shibboleth service is currently preventing off-campus access to the following InfoTrac databases:

* 17th and 18th Century Burney Collection
* 19th Century British Library Newspapers
* British Newspapers 1600-1900
* ECCO (Eighteenth Century Collections Online)
* European Business ASAP
* The Times Digital Archive: 1785-1985

Attempts to select the ‘Shibboleth users click here’ link generate an application error message. A video screengrab of the error can be reviewed here: http://screencast.com/t/ZTQ1YjM4NmM.

On-campus access is unaffected.

A further update will follow once off-campus access to the Gale-Cengage databases has been restored.

Gale-InfoTrac – Shibboleth authentication

Off-campus access to LLR’s subscription databases on the Gale-InfoTrac platform is now by university username and password (using the Shibboleth framework). The databases involved in the change from Athens to Shibboleth based authentication are:

  • 17th and 18th Century Burney Collection (* a new collection)
  • 19th Century British Library Newspapers
  • British Newspapers 1600-1900 (* a new collection)
  • ECCO (Eighteenth Century Collections Online)
  • European Business ASAP
  • The Times Digital Archive: 1785-1985

Links and prompts in eSearch and SFX have been updated accordingly. A guide to using Shibboleth authentication on the Gale-InfoTrace platform has been added to the eServices Support wiki

The Times Digital Archive: 1785-1985 – enabled for remote and metasearching

The Times Digital Archive: 1785-1985 can now be remote and metasearched from within eSearch. Under the Advanced search option is it possible to select a particular Year (as a second search field) to focus on a particular 12-month period within the 200 year run. It is possible to deep-link to a particular digital facsimile of a page from The Times directly from the search result in eSearch.
